Professor Roland Jones

Roland Jones began his career with a BSc in Pharmacology at the University of Bradford (1971-75) where he was inspired to become a neuropharmacologist by Bob Naylor and a year on placement in the “Mood Modifier” project at Beechams in Harlow. After a PhD in Cardiff he spent 11 years overseas with positions at the University of Saskatchewan, Ciba-Geigy in Basel, the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich and the Australian National University. He returned to the UK in 1990 as a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow in the Pharmacology Department in Oxford, moving to Readerships in the Physiology Department in Bristol (1996) and Pharmacology in Bath (2004). He gained a personal Chair in 2013 and was Head of the Pharmacology Group (2013-7). His research has examined the modification of synaptic transmission by neuroactive drugs using in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, focusing initially on antidepressants before switching attention to antiepileptics in the mid 1980s. He was awarded a DSc by Cardiff University (2004), and elected to Fellowship of the BPS (2008), the RSB (2016) and The Phys. Soc. (2017). He has served on several committees at the BPS.
